Together with the University of Regina’s Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, we at FNUniv are pleased to present three Indigenous focused-graduate programs designed to advance one’s education in the fields of language, social work, and education. The Presence of Elders in the Classrooms
Traditional oral teachings, the presence of Elders in the classrooms, and student participation in traditional ceremonies all contribute to the students’ education. Students in Saskatchewan have access to the full range of available programs at any of the university’s three campuses located in Regina, Saskatoon, or Prince Albert. The university also provides students with the option to participate in community-based programs, distance education, and web-based classes.

What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to understand the reasons why first-year nursing students at First Nations University of Canada choose programs of study other than the Bachelor of Nursing (BON). A large portion of students choose to complete their studies at the College at First Nations University of Canada, which is located on the traditional territory of the Mohawk people in New York State. The research study aims to identify the needs and barriers that students experience during their first year of nursing study, as well as the specific learning needs of each student.
The study also hopes to identify potential motivators and barriers to improved health and wellbeing experienced by first-year nursing students at FNCNU. The purpose of this study is to understand the current state of First Nations students and to identify and address any barriers that may be preventing them from succeeding.

Who should take part in this research study?
There are two types of participants in this study: students and their parents/guardians. The purpose of the study is to identify the needs and wants of Native students and to offer advice and support on how to best meet those needs. The participants will be first generation college students from First Nations communities, most of whom are descendants of First Nations people. One of the goals of the students will be to identify “what it takes” to attend First Nations University of Canada and to provide insight into the experience of becoming a first generation student. The survey will also collect information about the student’s family finances, living arrangements, and other relevant data.
